- ItemA review of technologies for collaborative online information seeking. On the contribution of collaborative argumentation(2021) Mayweg-Paus, Elisabeth; Zimmermann, Maria; Le, Nguyen-Thinh; Pinkwart, NielsIn everyday life, people seek, evaluate, and use online sources to underpin opinions and make decisions. While education must promote the skills people need to critically question the sourcing of online information, it is important, more generally, to understand how to successfully promote the acquisition of any skills related to seeking online information. This review outlines technologies that aim to support users when they collaboratively seek online information. Upon integrating psychological–pedagogical approaches on trust in and the sourcing of online information, argumentation, and computer-supported collaborative learning, we reviewed the literature (N= 95 journal articles) on technologies for collaborative online information seeking. The technologies we identified either addressed collaborative online information seeking as an exclusive process for searching for online information or, alternatively, addressed online information seeking within the context of a more complex learning process. Our review was driven by three main research questions: We aimed to understand whether and how the studies considered 1) the role of trust and critical questioning in the sourcing of online information, 2) the learning processes at play when information seekers engage in collaborative argumentation, and 3) what affordances are offered by technologies that support users’ collaborative seeking of online information. The reviewed articles that focused exclusively on technologies for seeking online information primarily addressed aspects of cooperation (e.g., task management), whereas articles that focused on technologies for integrating the processes of information seeking into the entire learning processes instead highlighted aspects of collaborative argumentation (e.g., exchange of multiple perspectives and critical questioning in argumentation). Seven of the articles referred to trust as an aspect of seekers’ sourcing strategies. We emphasize how researchers’, users’, and technology developers’ consideration of collaborative argumentation could expand the benefits of technological support for seeking online information.
- ItemAudit - and then what? A roadmap for digitization of learning factories(2019) Ullrich, André; Enke, Judith; Teichmann, Malte; Kreß, Antonio; Gronau, NorbertCurrent trends such as digital transformation, Internet of Things, or Industry 4.0 are challenging the majority of learning factories. Regardless of whether a conventional learning factory, a model factory, or a digital learning factory, traditional approaches such as the monotonous execution of specific instructions don‘t suffice the learner’s needs, market requirements as well as especially current technological developments. Contemporary teaching environments need a clear strategy, a road to follow for being able to successfully cope with the changes and develop towards digitized learning factories. This demand driven necessity of transformation leads to another obstacle: Assessing the status quo and developing and implementing adequate action plans. Within this paper, details of a maturity-based audit of the hybrid learning factory in the Research and Application Centre Industry 4.0 and a thereof derived roadmap for the digitization of a learning factory are presented.
- ItemChancen und Grenzen digitaler Lehre an Hochschulen aus Studierendenperspektive. Empirische Befunde und Gestaltungshinweise(2021) Vladova, Gergana; Ullrich, André; Bender, BenedictThe design of qualitative, excellent teaching requires collaboration between teachers and learners. For this purpose, face-to-face teaching benefits from a long-standing tradition, while digital teaching is comparatively still at the beginning of its dissemination. A major developmental step toward the digitization of teaching was achieved in the context of university teaching during the Covid 19 pandemic in spring 2020, when face-to-face teaching was interrupted for months. During this time, important insights into the opportunities and limitations of digital teaching were gained. This paper presents selected results of a study conducted at four German universities and with 875 responses in spring 2020. The study uncovers opportunities and limitations of digital teaching from the students’ perspective and against the background of their experience in the completely digital semester. The results are used as a basis for deriving design guidelines for digital teaching and learning offerings. Based on a model for analyzing the design of teaching and learning formats, these indications are structured according to the elements learners, teachers, teaching content, environment and teaching style.
- ItemData mining of scientific research on artificial intelligence in teaching and administration in higher education institutions: a bibliometrics analysis and recommendation for future research(2022) Ullrich, André; Vladova, Gergana; Eigelshoven, Felix; Renz, AndréTeaching and learning as well as administrative processes are still experiencing intensive changes with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and its diverse application opportunities in the context of higher education. Therewith, the scientific interest in the topic in general, but also specific focal points rose as well. However, there is no structured overview on AI in teaching and administration processes in higher education institutions that allows to identify major research topics and trends, and concretizing peculiarities and develops recommendations for further action. To overcome this gap, this study seeks to systematize the current scientific discourse on AI in teaching and administration in higher education institutions. This study identified an (1) imbalance in research on AI in educational and administrative contexts, (2) an imbalance in disciplines and lack of interdisciplinary research, (3) inequalities in cross-national research activities, as well as (4) neglected research topics and paths. In this way, a comparative analysis between AI usage in administration and teaching and learning processes, a systematization of the state of research, an identification of research gaps as well as further research path on AI in higher education institutions are contributed to research.
- ItemDem Mitarbeiter zu Diensten. Weiterbildung und Qualifizierung als Personennahe Dienstleistung(2020) Vladova, Gergana; Heuts, Alexander; Teichmann, MalteThe further training and qualification of employees are central success factors of digital change. The central challenge is to offer these customized services and not to presuppose acceptance, but rather to regard it as a target value. However, this will only happen if the employees are seen as partners and their needs and understanding are taken into account in the long term. Against this background, this article proposes an approach to realize further education as a personal service. For this purpose, a brief outline of the basic competence requirements of digital change is given first. Afterwards, the current situation of in-company continuing training in the digital transformation will be examined. A quantitative survey was conducted over a period of six months to determine how employees perceive the digital transformation of their company and the resulting needs for continuing vocational training. Based on this, three current paradoxes are derived, which can be prevented by conducting continuing education as personal service. Recommendations and solutions will be discussed and further research is needed.
- ItemDevelopment of the Industrial IoT Competences in the Areas of Organization, Process, and Interaction Based on the Learning Factory Concept(2017) Gronau, Norbert; Ullrich, André; Teichmann, MalteLately, first implementation approaches of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies penetrate industrial value-adding processes. Within this, the competence requirements for employees are changing. Employees‘ organization, process, and interaction competences are of crucial importance in this new IoT environment, however, in students and vocational training not sufficiently considered yet. On the other hand, conventional learning factories evolve and transform to digital learning factories. Nevertheless, the integration of IoT technology and its usage for training in digital learning factories has been largely neglected thus far. Existing learning factories do not explicitly and properly consider IoT technology, which leads to deficiencies regarding an appropriate development of employees‘ Industrial IoT competences. The goal of this contribution is to point out a didactic concept that enables development and training of these new demanded competences by using an IoT laboratory. For this purpose, a design science approach is applied. The result of this contribution is a didactic concept for the development of Industrial IoT competences in an IoT laboratory.
- ItemExploring Students’ Engagement Patterns in SPOC Forums and their Association with Course Performance(2018) Liu, Zhi; Pinkwart, Niels; Liu, Hai; Liu, Sannyuya; Zhang, GuangtaoWith the popularity of Small Private Online Courses (SPOCs) in higher education, a plentiful of discussion data has been increasingly generated in SPOC forums. With 752 undergraduates’ discussion posts, this study aims to investigate students’ engagement patterns within SPOC forums in terms of engagement behaviors and emotions. Firstly, we designed a behavioral code rule to identify posting- and content-level behaviors, and examined their association with course performance. Secondly, we built an emotion lexicon including positivity, negativity and confusion word sets, and adopted an emotion calculation approach to visualize emotional evolutionary trends and to examine emotional differences in registration types and course performance. The results show that, (1) the high-performing group was more active in the most engagement behaviors except for interactive postings. (2) The registered group delivered more threads and wrote richer vocabulary in post content. (3) Whether students were registered for a course or not did not have a significant effect on their emotional expressions, but the registered group exhibited more confusion in forum interactions at the end of the semester. (4) Positive emotion was prevailing for the entire population. Furthermore, compared with the low-achieving group, the high- performing group had higher emotion densities in three types of emotions.

The human workforce is a central success factor, but employees must be prepared for the requirements induced by change, using inter alia competence development. In reality, however, the content-related and pedagogical freedom to design vocational training is often inadequately addressed. Based on the changes trough digitization in production processes, the challenges of current continuing vocational training in enterprises are discussed. Recommendations for action are then derived and illustrated by examples. The recommendations for action can serve as a basis for the design and implementation of their further vocational training practice.

Das Internet der Dinge beschleunigt Automatisierung bis hin zu autonomen cyberphysischen Systemen. Dieser Prozess wird begleitet von einer weiteren Zunahme von Daten. Gleichzeitig reduziert sich die Aktualität der Daten und damit die Dauer ihrer Relevanz. Die Herausforderungen im Umfeld von Industrie 4.0 zu meistern bedeutet für Menschen in Organisationen diese wachsenden Datenmengen und Anpassung an fortwährende Veränderung zu bewältigen. Intentionales Vergessen kann hier unterstützen. Intentionales Vergessen fokussiert das Vergessen irrelevanter Informationen und Verhaltensweisen zu Gunsten relevanter. In diesem Artikel stellen wir einen experimentellen Ansatz zur Erforschung von Prozessen des intentionalen Vergessens in Organisationen in einer Laborumgebung (Anwendungszentrum Industrie 4.0) vor. Im Fokus der Untersuchung steht dabei das Vergessen einer ungültig gewordenen Produktions-Routine und das Ausführen der neuen, jetzt gültigen. Wir beschreiben dabei zunächst das innovative experimentelle Design zur Untersuchung von Vergessensprozessen. In einer ersten Untersuchung mit N = 18 Personen, die insgesamt 3046 Handlungen zu t1 (1402) und t2 (1644) ausführen, zeigte sich, dass hoch gelernte (prozeduralisierte) Handlungen schwerer zu vergessen sind als ohnehin nicht prozeduralisierte. Es zeigt sich aber kein Unterschied hinsichtlich der Art der Handlungen und der Hinweisreize, durch die sie aufgerufen werden.
- ItemIntentional Forgetting in Organizations: The Importance of Eliminating Retrieval Cues for Implementing New Routines(2018) Kluge, Annette; Gronau, NorbertTo cope with the already large, and ever increasing, amount of information stored in organizational memory, “forgetting,” as an important human memory process, might be transferred to the organizational context. Especially in intentionally planned change processes (e.g., change management), forgetting is an important precondition to impede the recall of obsolete routines and adapt to new strategic objectives accompanied by new organizational routines. We first comprehensively review the literature on the need for organizational forgetting and particularly on accidental vs. intentional forgetting. We discuss the current state of the art of theory and empirical evidence on forgetting from cognitive psychology in order to infer mechanisms applicable to the organizational context. In this respect, we emphasize retrieval theories and the relevance of retrieval cues important for forgetting. Subsequently, we transfer the empirical evidence that the elimination of retrieval cues leads to faster forgetting to the forgetting of organizational routines, as routines are part of organizational memory. We then propose a classification of cues (context, sensory, business process-related cues) that are relevant in the forgetting of routines, and discuss a meta-cue called the “situational strength” cue, which is relevant if cues of an old and a new routine are present simultaneously. Based on the classification as business process-related cues (information, team, task, object cues), we propose mechanisms to accelerate forgetting by eliminating specific cues based on the empirical and theoretical state of the art. We conclude that in intentional organizational change processes, the elimination of cues to accelerate forgetting should be used in change management practices.
- ItemKostenfreie Onlinekurse nachhaltig mit personalisiertem Marketing finanzieren – Ein Vorschlag zur synergetischen Kombination zweier datengetriebener Geschäftsmodelle(2021) Rüdian, Sylvio; Vladova, GerganaSelf-determined learning is increasingly accepted in our society. Online courses offer scheduling flexibility and pacing options, so that the learners can complete their assignments at convenient times. Moreover, online courses can be adapted and individualized to match the learning progress of the users through various adaptations. There is a large target group that aims to develop certain skills with online courses. But their creation, implementation, maintenance, and support are cost-intensive, which means that high-quality tutored courses often have to be offered fee-based to operate at least cost-neutrally without gaining some profit. In this paper, we demonstrate and discuss an open, sustainable, data-driven two-sided business model for using verified online courses and making them available to every learner free of charge. The core of the business model is the use of behavioral data for deriving personality traits and interests, and their use in a commercial context. This method is already widely accepted in web search, which is now implemented in the learning context. The opportunities, challenges, but also barriers that need to be overcome for the business model to be applicable and ethical at the same time are discussed while two independent but synergistically connected business models are presented. Besides, we examined the acceptance and expectation of the target group for the presented business model to understand the necessary core assets for practice. The results of the study indicate that the business model is fundamentally accepted. 10% of the respondents prefer to learn with virtual assistants instead of tutors, and the majority of users is not aware that personality traits can be derived from user behavior.
- ItemLanguage Learning Tool for Refugees: Identifying the Language Learning Needs of Syrian Refugees Through Participatory Design(2019) Abou-Khalil, Victoria; Helou, Samar; Flanagan, Brendan; Pinkwart, Niels; Ogata, HiroakiA large number of refugees need to learn a new language in order to transition to, or settle in, a new country. Most refugees have access to smartphones with which they can access mobile language learning tools. However, refugees in different stages of their journeys have different language learning needs. Identifying the unique needs of refugees is essential to design language learning tools that support their language learning activities. Through a two-part participatory design study, we identify and compare the tacit and latent language learning needs of two different groups of Syrian refugees: a group in transition in Lebanon, and a group settling in Germany. The Syrian refugees we worked with in Lebanon are studying English to transition to another country with better living conditions. On the other hand, the Syrian refugees we worked with in Germany are trying to learn German to better integrate into German society. Our results show overlapping needs and specific needs for the two groups of refugees. We present our findings and discuss the opportunities and challenges for designing language learning tools to support the language learning activities of refugees.
- ItemReinvigorating the Discourse on Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence in Educational Technologies(2021) Renz, André; Vladova, GerganaThe increasing relevance of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in various domains has led to high expectations of benefits, ranging from precision, efficiency, and optimization to the completion of routine or time-consuming tasks. Particularly in the field of education, AI applications promise immense innovation potential. A central focus in this field is on analyzing and evaluating learner characteristics to derive learning profiles and create individualized learning environments. The development and implementation of such AI-driven approaches are related to learners' data, and thus involves several privacies, ethics, and morality challenges. In this paper, we introduce the concept of human-centered AI, and consider how an AI system can be developed in line with human values without posing risks to humanity. Because the education market is in the early stages of incorporating AI into educational tools, we believe that this is the right time to raise awareness about the use of principles that foster human-centered values and help in building responsible, ethical, and value-oriented AI.

However, the potentials of serious games to transfer and perpetuate knowledge and action patterns in learning factories have not been levered so far. The goal of this paper is to introduce a serious game as an instrument for knowledge transfer and perpetuation. Therefore, reqirements towards serious games in the context of learning factories are pointed out. As a result, that builds on these requirements, a serious learning game for the topic of Industry 4.0 is practically designed and evaluated.
- ItemStudents’ Acceptance of Technology-Mediated Teaching – How It Was Influenced During the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020. A Study From Germany(2021) Vladova, Gergana; Ullrich, André; Bender, Benedict; Gronau, NorbertIn response to the impending spread of COVID-19, universities worldwide abruptly stopped face-to-face teaching and switched to technology-mediated teaching. As a result, the use of technology in the learning processes of students of different disciplines became essential and the only way to teach, communicate and collaborate for months. In this crisis context, we conducted a longitudinal study in four German universities, in which we collected a total of 875 responses from students of information systems and music and arts at four points in time during the spring–summer 2020 semester. Our study focused on (1) the students’ acceptance of technology-mediated learning, (2) any change in this acceptance during the semester and (3) the differences in acceptance between the two disciplines. We applied the Technology Acceptance Model and were able to validate it for the extreme situation of the COVID-19 pandemic. We extended the model with three new variables (time flexibility, learning flexibility and social isolation) that influenced the construct of perceived usefulness. Furthermore, we detected differences between the disciplines and over time. In this paper, we present and discuss our study’s results and derive short- and long-term implications for science and practice.
- ItemSubject-oriented learning - A new perspective for vocational training in learning factories(2019) Teichmann, Malte; Ullrich, André; Gronau, NorbertThe transformation to a digitized company changes not only the work but also social context for the employees and requires inter alia new knowledge and skills from them. Additionally, individual action problems arise. This contribution proposes the subject-oriented learning theory, in which the employees´ action problems are the starting point of training activities in learning factories. In this contribution, the subject-oriented learning theory is exemplified and respective advantages for vocational training in learning factories are pointed out both theoretically and practically. Thereby, especially the individual action problems of learners and the infrastructure are emphasized as starting point for learning processes and competence development.
- ItemThe influence of digital competences, self-organization, and independent learning abilities on students’ acceptance of digital learning.(2022) Scheel, Laura; Vladova, Gergana; Ullrich, AndréDespite digital learning disrupting traditional learning concepts and activities in higher education, for the successful integration of digital learning, the use and acceptance of the students are essential. This acceptance depends in turn on students’ characteristics and dispositions, among other factors. In our study, we investigated the influence of digital competences, self-organization, and independent learning abilities on students’ acceptance of digital learning and the influence of their acceptance on the resistance to the change from face-to-face to digital learning. To do so, we surveyed 350 students and analyzed the impact of the different dispositions using ordinary least squares regression analysis. We could confirm a significant positive influence of all the tested dispositions on the acceptance of digital learning. With the results, we can contribute to further investigating the underlying factors that can lead to more positive student perceptions of digital learning and build a foundation for future strategies of imple- menting digital learning into higher education successfully.
